I just read a few moments ago a very interesting article.  It seems a Baptist church from Kansas is set to protest at the San Diego Comic-Con today, Thursday, July 22, 2010.  Their reason, because they feel that the fans have turned the superheroes and other comic book characters into idols.  Idol worship, that’s right.  Batman as the golden calf.  Spider-man a graven image.

The church in question is the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas.  According to the article I read, they are the same people who have protested in the past at funerals of our military men and women who have died overseas in battle.  I don’t know their reasons for that, and I really don’t want to know the reasoning; knowing they’ve done it is bad enough.

I’d rather see them protest the comic book convention.  The funny part is that they are only protesting for about forty-five minutes.  That, in itself, is silly enough.  Apparently idolatry isn’t worth a full hour.  But it’s the USA, and they have a right to do that.  It could be worse, they could be holding up their little signs at a soldier’s funeral, someone who has been killed in the line of duty protecting their rights and freedoms to hold such protests.  So, if they want to claim that Ghost Rider or Superman or Reed Richards are the devil, and that we are bowing down before them, let them.  At least with them protesting the San Diego Comic-Con they won’t be out bombing an abortion center.
