It seems that with each passing year more and more of my childhood is dying away. It’s only rightly so, nothing lasts forever. Time marches on, yadda yadda yadda, blah blah blah. As Johnny Thunders so accurately put it, “You can’t put your arms around a memory.”
I read the other day that the folks at DC Comics are, or have, revamped Wonder Woman. In doing so, they have redressed her. Gone is the red, white, and blue, curve clinging outfit of the past; it has been replaced with pants. Tight pants, sure, she is a superhero after all, but pants nonetheless. WTF? #!#@*!!!
Is this political correctness? Did Wonder Woman’s original outfit defame women, cast an ill light upon them? Was it sexist somehow? She has always been more tactfully, and classily, dressed than Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera or any number of pop culture harlots. Why do this? These times, they are a-changin’, I suppose. I wonder what Lynda Carter thinks of all this? She rocked that American themed two-piece.
But costume changes are normal in the comics world. They at least get it right the majority of the time, whereas a hero’s transition to film is often less successful. I stumbled upon some mock-ups for costumes for the Captain America and Thor movies…and I wanted to cry. Thor’s proposed costume (and I’m guessing it’s the one they went with from one picture I saw) looks a little better than Cap’s proposed threads. More and more memories circle the drain. Heaven help us.
You guys be the judge and let us know what you think.
