When the scientist (Ron Perlman) leading a top-secret Middle Eastern archeological site goes missing, an elite military unit is sent on a search and mission. Descending deep below civilization, Captain Mack (Gooding Jr.) and his team soon find themselves face to face with an ancient evil. An evil that may not be of this world. Co-starring Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Taryn Manning (Hustle & Flow), Ray Winstone (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) and punk rock legend Henry Rollins (Heat).
Let me say up front, the trailer was good. Not that The Devil’s Tomb is a bad movie, just that it’s not that good of one either. There’s not much more to say than this is a hodge podge of much better movies, such as The Thing, Prince of Darkness, The Prophecy, and other films ad infinity.
The good parts are the cast, for the most part. Cuba Gooding, Jr. ain’t nothing to write home about, but overall he’s okay. Same for the rest of the people who somehow, for some reason, are in this movie. You can find worse ways to spend ninety minutes of your life (example: Laid To Rest). Of course, you can find better ways to spend ninety minutes of your life as well. Either way, it’s time none of us will ever get back.
Oddly, The Devil’s Tombfeels somewhat comfortable, kind of like an old pair of shoes. You know what to expect, and it feels alright. All of this is probably due to its lack of originality and its cribbing of better flicks (the main character’s name is Mack for crying out loud). I’ve got nothing against cribbing. I just wish this had been one of those rare finds that not only lived up to it’s trailer, but exceeded. I may have gone into this hoping for way too much; damn the trailers.
I may have to just start watching movie trailers and skipping the actual movie.
